Useful information

DEVIN

Devin is located in the central part of the Rhodope Mountains in the valley of the Vacha River, 45 km from the city of Smolyan. Devin is also at a distance of 220 km from Sofia and 70 km from Plovdiv. The town itself is located in the vicinity of the popular ski resort of Pamporovo which is 35 km east of Devin.

Devin is surrounded by superb scenery and it is famous for its bottled water and the spa centres.  The waters have been claimed to treat and heal a variety of maladies: conditions of the skeletal, peripheral nervous, cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, skin disorders and others. In addition to these, the water is drunk or inhaled in the treatment of respiratory diseases, allergies and infections. The conditions available in Devin make it a centre for recovery and stabilising health.

The situation of Devin offers access to nearby gorges, rock formations, caves, forests, natural reserves with protected and endemic species, and most of all, clean air. Namely Trigrad gorge, the Devil's Throat cave and Yagodinska cave. The Trigrad-Yagodina region has a karst scenery and has tens of other, albeit inhospitable, caves and rock formations. The protected region "Chairite" attracts visitors with an abundance of lakes, meadows and spruce and beech forests .

SHIROKA LAKA(22kms)
The village of Shiroka Laka (architectural reserve), is known not only  in Bulgaria but also abroad with its original architecture, typical of the Rhodope region, its traditions and its rich musical past.
It is the centre of a small area of five villages (Stoykite, Gela, Stikal and Solichta) where the Christian population is mixed with the Bulgarian Muslims  due to the islamisation of the Rhodopes region during the Ottoman rule - 17th century.
The natural insecurity of the population during the Ottoman period, the national consciousness  and the economic prosperity  reflected in the architecture of the houses  which are of "the big Rhodopes house“ type. They are two stories high, with bay windows and stone chimneys, thick walls, small battered windows and doors ,wooden stairs and a small cellar with shelter.
There are fountains in the middle of their paved courtyards . All this is created with great taste and in harmony with nature.
Just a few kilometers above is  the village of Gela -the legendary birthplace of the mythical singer Orpheus. To follow the music tradition the National School of Folklore Arts was founded in Shiroka Laka. The town of Gela also hosts the International Bagpipe festival in August.

PAMPOROVO (35 kms)
Located in the Rhodopes, and at an altitude of 1650 m.,this is the sunniest of Bulgaria's ski resorts. In addition, 17 km. of ski slopes and 34 km. of cross-country ski trails  make Pamporovo the largest ski area in the country. In summer, thanks to its mild climate, the resort attracts hikers who can explore the villages in the Rhodope

THE TRIGRAD GORGE (25 kms)
Named after the small town situated nearby, the road to the gorge is mountainous and very spectacular. At certain places, the sheer walls overhanging the foaming river form a narrow corridor. "The worry" feeling when facing these immense cliffs will be quickly  replaced by a feeling of pure  “astonishment” in front of the breathtaking beauty of the place.

YAGODINA CAVE (25 kms)
This wild terrain abounds in caves and some of them are opened to the public. You can visit the  highly regarded  Yagodina cave, which is part of the magnificent Karst complex of the gorge of the river Buynovska. It is composed of mazes, ditches and several rooms on 5 levels and is 10 km long. Visitors enter the cave through an artificial opening (tunnel) and follow a special path with electric lights illuminating the beautiful and mysterious formations – stalactites, stalagmites, and cave pearls. You can take an organised tour to discover the natural beauty of the region.

THE DEVIL'S THROAT CAVE (25 kms)
Another famous cave in the region is the mysterious and fearsome Devil's Cave.
It is according to legend, the route by which Orpheus, the legendary Greek singer, attempted to retrieve his beloved Euridice from Hades in the Underworld. You will be impressed by the sound of  the river flowing and shattering than a precipice. A fog of water particles will leave to your imagination to guess the power of the unleashed forces of Nature.

THE MARVELLOUS BRIDGES (72 kms)

One more example of the creativity of the Mother Nature. The "bridges" were formed by the erosive activity of the once high-water river. It transformed the marble clefts into a deep water cave, the ceiling of which whittled up through time and collapsed, allegedly during an earthquake.
The Wonderful Bridges is included among the 100 National Touristic Places of the Bulgarian Touristic Union,

BACHKOVO MONASTERY(88 kms)
Founded in 1083 by the Georgian Pakuriani, Byzantine commander the monastery  remained the favourite destination of the Bulgarian tsars.
“Asleep” under the Ottoman empire, it continued to receive support and donations from the Christian population. The beautiful church St. Mary in the courtyard was built in 1604 and keeps a few sculptures from the 17th century. The last renovations took place in the years 1830 - 1840 with frescos from Master Zahari Zograf and his disciples. You can also admire the "miraculous" icon of the Virgin ,which legend claims  to be an authentic portrait of Mary ,painted by the Apostle Luke. The icon plays a central role in celebrations of the name day of the Assumption of the Virgin(August 15),and a ritual procession  to a chapel in the nearby hills 25 days after the Orthodox Easter.

PLOVDIV (94 kms)
Located in the Thracian plain, on the banks of the river Maritsa and on seven hills, this is the second largest urban centre of population, by area and by its place as a cultural and historical  centre.
The Old Plovdiv, called the architectural reserve of the 18th and 19th centuries is admired by all visitors. The remains of the Thracian civilization mingle with Roman  monuments, while the old turkish mosques add an oriental flavour to a city where successive  and sometimes antagonist civilizations have managed to combine the best of what they had to offer  to create the original  personality of Plovdiv .
But above all the exceptional group of houses from the era of the national awakening in the "Trimontium" or Old Plovdiv are these  that gives this young and lively city its unique charm.
A walk along the central pedestrian street of Prince Alexander of Battenberg with its neo-baroque facades will take you to the Church Sts. Constantine and Helena with its icons of the master Zahari Zograf, Djoumaya Mosque, the Roman amphitheatre and the Old Plovdiv.

KOVATCHEVITSA (103 kms)
Kovatchevitsa is located along the riverbed of Kanina river in the Rhodopes. Its existence dates back to the early 17th century when bulgarians who tried to flee the Turkish Islamization, settled there. Today it still retains the atmosphere of the past thanks to its beautiful houses with tiled roofs and "fortified" architecture.
