Every year the village of Gela, located in the mountains above Shiroka Laka, is host to an annual bagpipe festival. The festival is usually held during the first weekend of August, in a beautiful meadow of the Rhodope Mountains, and features musicians and groups from all over Bulgaria.
The origin of the festival, which has been held since 2001, comes from a very old tradition; annual reunions of the families of Gela and the surrounding area have been held on this ground for hundreds of years. This tradition has been kept alive to this day and expanded upon, as thousands of people come to the festival every year to get a taste of the folkloric songs and dances and enjoy the incredible views of the Rhodopes. Recently, more and more people from other countries have begun attending the festival, transforming it into a celebration of unity and cultural diversity.
The festival is organized as a competition, where participants play for a well-respected group of judges, and features cash and other prizes for the winners. The participants are separated into three age groups: ages 14 and under, 15 to 20, and 21 and older.
If you are interested in attending the festival, there are various hotels and guesthouses in Gela available for accommodation. Many of the attendants also spend the weekend camping in tents on the festival grounds.
