Baba Marta Day is a traditional Bulgarian holiday, of pagan origin. In fact, this is one of the oldest traditions still practiced in Europe. On the first of March, the Bulgarian people give each other gifts in the form of martenitsi: red and white pins or bracelets made of cloth. The colors of the martenitsa are thought to symbolize a rebirth, or the start of the next growing season. They are worn throughout most of March, until the storks arrive from Africa (the stork is also a symbol of new life), or a budding tree is spotted. They are then taken off and tied onto trees that have begun to bloom, in order to bring good luck and a bountiful harvest.
