Epiphany is a Christian holiday which commemorates the revelation that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Normally there is a feast held in honor of the holiday, but beyond that, most countries have their own particular way of celebrating. The Bulgarians celebrate Epiphany on the 6th of January, with some interesting events taking place. It is a common tradition for a priest to throw a wooden cross into the river for the Bulgarian men to search for. It is believed that the person who finds the cross will receive good health and fortune for themselves and their family.
Kalofer, a town located at the foot of the Balkan Mountains, holds a horo (a traditional Bulgarian dance) with bagpipes, drums, and flags in the freezing river.
