Originally a Thracian tradition which was held to protect the harvests and scare away evil spirits, the Koukeri ritual takes place shortly before Lent. Bulgarian men dress up as "Koukeri" costumes, with scary masks, hanging bells and wooden swords. The purpose of the Koukeri was to chase away the evil spirits of winter, and to usher in springtime and the new agricultural season.Today the ritual is moreso a festive event, where members of the community can gather and partake in their ancestral traditions.
The "Starchevata" Koukeri Festival in Razlog is also held this time of year, on the 17th of January.
