The Lazarouvane Festival takes place every year on Saint Lazarus Day, eight days before Orthodox Easter. This holiday is a celebration of youth and fertility, focused on the young women of Bulgaria. The girls go around the houses of their community dressed in traditional Bulgarian garb, singing folk songs and dancing. Gifts such eggs, pearls and flowers are given to the young ladies, who on this day demonstrate to their community that they are coming of age and ready to be married.
