On February 14th, the Bulgarian people celebrate the day of St. Trifon, or Trifon Zarezan. Trifon Zarezon is the saint of wine and grape vines, and on this day Bulgarians honor him by preforming the first vine-pruning of the season. Men work in the fields, while women cook festive meals and bread. After the pruning is complete, the men form the twigs into wreaths. There are various other rituals performed on this holiday, which indicates the end of winter and welcomes in spring. One of the more festive takes place after the work is done for the day, and all of the men gather at the house of the man who had the largest harvest and made the best wine, referred to as “the King”. The King and the other men proceed to get drunk, in order to gauruntee a bountiful harvest for the coming year. Trifon Zarezan Day also takes place on St. Valentine’s Day, making it a very festive day for the Bulgarian people.
