Elena has kept the spirit of the 19th century in its town center. There are 147 monuments, 7 of them of national importance. The most famous landmark of the town is the Ilarion Makariopolski House museum.
The oldest monument is the Church of St. Nicholas, which is included in the list of national heritage sites for its murals. It dates from the 17th century. It is located in a gated ethnographic complex that you can visit, in between the “Daskolovnitsata” – the oldest class school in Bulgaria – and the temple “Assumption”. The emblem of the city is the clock tower, which is located on the highest point of the city center.
