The Hisarya Architectural Preserve is located in the heart of the modern town of the same name. The ancient city allows visitors to learn about the characteristics of urban Roman architecture from the late 3rd century to the early 4th century. In fact, after the conquest of Thrace, the Romans discovered the beneficial properties of the water sources in the village, which received city status in the year 293. During this time the town’s defenses were strengthened with the addition of massive fortress walls.
Destroyed several times over the centuries, traces of Hisarya’s glory days can still be seen, such as the walls of the fortress, the ancient amphitheater, Roman baths, barracks, houses and public buildings, the tomb of a Roman family, Christian basilicas, Roman urban network and water pipelines.
The fortress wall (2300 meters long) remains one of the best preserved in Europe from that time, a little copy of the hull of Constantinople, which suggests that this was an important city. Let yourself be carried away by the charm of this beautiful and colorful town during your walk around the center and in the ancient ruins.
