The small town of Kalofer is situated in the foothills of the southern slopes of Stara Planina, close to the Central Balkan National Park. It sits on the banks of the river Tundzha between Central Balkan and Sredna Gora. The park is home to the Botev peak, which has an altitude of 2376 meters above sea level. Its name comes from the Bulgarian poet and revolutionary Vasil Levski’s assistant – Hristo Botev.
Moreover the Hristo Botev National Museum is one of the hundreds of national sites open to visitors every day. This is the birthplace of Botev, and contains an exhibition of documents and personal belongings of the extraordinary Bulgarian hero. A monument to the poet-revolutionary is found in the city. Kalofer is known across Bulgaria for its ecotourism and received an award from the European Union for the creation of eco projects and programs. A visit to this part of Bulgaria will surely include many excursions, and walks on foot or horseback. This is an ideal way to discover the country’s natural beauty. A small tourist office in the city can provide you with more information.
