The Velyanov House is located near the central square of Bansko, by the Holy Trinity Church. The house is an example of the architectural style of fortified houses from the 18th – 19th centuries.
It was built in the 18th century, out of stone and wood, with two floors, and two hiding places that were linked together. These hiding places were used for protection in case of sudden attacks by the Ottoman Turks.
The house features impressive murals and sculpted ceilings, which are the work of Velyan Ognev, a student from the Debar Art School. He came to Bansko to work on decorating the Holy Trinity Church, and the locals gave him a house in gratitude. The Velyanov House was declared a historical monument in 1967, and has been open to visitors since 1977.
