The beautiful village of Bozhentsi is famous for its preserved architecture, restored houses with rooves of tikli (old style Bulgarian bricks made of rocks) in the national awakening style, and wonderful nature. The food is delicious, and in the local taverns you will find many warm and friendly faces. According to local legends, the village was founded around 600 hundred years ago by Bozhana, a Bulgarian noble. Following the conquest of the Bulgarian Capital Veliko Tarnovo by the Ottomans and the death of her husband, Bozhana and her family found shelter in the deep forests, and founded the village there.
Bozhentsi is located near the ancient Roman road “Nicopolis ad Istrum” (north of Veliko Tarnovo). The village is specialized in trade with Russia, Italy, Austria-Hungary, and France. Near the end of the 19th century, Bozhentsi had become an administrative, cultural, religious, and trade center with over 500 residents and 110 houses. It’s as if time has stood still in the village since then. It was declared a historic architectural reservation in the 8th issue of the national newspaper in 1964 and has preserved its 100-250 year old houses, which serve to remind of the visitors of the past. Stories told by the locals are filled with details of its past. Today, the village life is marked with a many cultural events throughout the year.
