The Church of Saint Stephen was built somewhere from the 11th to 13th centuries and underwent two expansions in the 16th and 18th centuries. It is a basilica made of stone blocks and bricks. The craftsmen utilized many decorative elements from early Christian monuments in its construction.
The frescoes found in the church date back to the year 1599 and were illustrated by three master painters. Over 1000 figures are presented in 258 different combinations. The rich architecture, 11th century iconostasis and brilliant frescoes, this church is a true monument to the cultural heritage of Bulgaria.
