The Sherif Halil Pasha Mosque, also known as the Tombul Mosque, is located near the center of Shumen. Built in 1774, the architecture of the mosque draws influence from an early 18th century oriental style called “Tulip” architecture, which is characterized by the presence of elements French Baroque style. It is the largest mosque in Bulgaria and the 2nd largest in the Balkan Peninsula after the Sultan Selim mosque, which is located in Edirne, Turkey.
Built on an area of 1730 square meters, the mosque includes some very large courtyards. It is one of the most visited tourist sites in the Shumen region.
