The Russian Orthodox Church was built in place of a Mosque that was torn down in 1882 following the independence of Bulgaria from the Ottomans. As a thanks to Russia, Bulgaria began the construction of the Church of St. Nicholas. The church is named honor of Tsar Nicholas II, who ruled at the time.
The church was constructed in 1907 and bless in 1914. Its style is similar to that of the Russian churches of the 17th century, with its five small gilded domes. Relatively narrow and dark inside, the interior contains frescoes from the school of Novgorod with beautiful a ceramic iconostasis. Housed in the crypt are the remains of St. Serafim Sobolev, Archbishop of Sofia. The proximity of the church to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral symbolizes the strong relationship between Russia and Bulgaria.
