The Vazov Eco-Trail is named after one of the greatest Bulgarian writers – Ivan Vasov. He visited this area to find inspiration for his works. The trail starts from the Koshushtitsa neighborhood, crosses the Iskar River, winds by the Skaklya waterfall (85 meters high, with irregular flow depending on the season) and climbs up the peak near the village of Zasele, ending with a stunning view of the Iskar Gorge.
It was built in 1972 by the local residents, and its steadily increasing popularity has earned the status of a national tourist destination. The trail was renovated in 2007. It is in very good condition, with small bridges that cross the stream, benches, and easy to follow, thanks to the safety signs. Many railings and stone steps provide easy transition to inaccessible areas. Wooden gazebos at the end of the trail are used to picnic and to enjoy the exceptional view.
To reach the trail you need to go through Gara Bov (coming from Sofia), pass the bridge over the Iskar River, and go left along the Skaklya River. There will be a sign 1.4 kilometers from the trail. At the end of the street, before the bridge you will find a small makeshift parking lot. Following the river, you will quickly find the indications to the path.
The length of the eco-trail is about an hour and 30 minutes at a normal walking pace. If you make a trip to the village you will find a very nice crème caramel in the local grocery store (which is part of the “Elata” complex. It will give you strength for the descent.
Those who wish to enjoy the view of Zasele without walking can go by car. A nameplate from the main road shows the way to the Vazpv trail and the village of Zasele (before the village of Gara Bov coming from Sofia).
