The medieval city of Cherven, founded by the Thracians, was one of the most important centers of the Second Bulgarian Empire (11th-14th centuries). Its strategic location and proximity to the then capital of Veliko Tarnovo ensured the development of the city. Once it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks, the city began to decline.
Despite centuries of oblivion and ruin, visitors can still see the ruins of the city. The place is not a very well-known tourist location, but has had a great contribution to the study of the history of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Baldwin Tower in Veliko Tarnovo is a copy of one of the 14th century towers of Cherven.
For people fascinated by medieval castles, this place would be very interesting, due to the minimal human intervention making it one of the best preserved medieval castles in Bulgaria.
