The bridge near Ruse, known as the Bridge of Friendship, is a steel bridge over the Danube River. It is located between Ruse and the town of Georgevo, and connects Bulgaria and Romania. Until the end of 2012, it was the only bridge between the two countries.
The bridge is 2.8 kilometers long and stands 30 meters above the water. The bridge was built with two levels: one for trains and another for vehicles. The middle part of the bridge can be raised to allow large ships to pass.
The structure was designed by architect Georgi Ovcharov, and the layout by Ukranian sculptor Mihailo Paraschuk. The construction took two years and five months before being officially opened on June 20th, 1954. It is the largest composite bridge in Europe.
