The Ovech Fortress is located east of the small town of Provadia. The fortress was built by the Byzantines and operated from the 4th to the 7th century before being conquered by the Bulgarians. The fortress is known by many names. The Byzantines referred to it as Provat or Provaton, the Bulgarians Ovech, while the Turks called it Tash Hisar, which means “stone castle” in Turkish.
Today the castle still remains, a witness of many long years. Some remains include walls and towers, and several wells with a depth of 79 meters, not to mention the breathtaking view of Provadia and the surroundings. The nature and cultural enrichment make this a great place for a walk.
