In August of 2000, the largest Thracian religious/cult complex was discovered near the villages of Starosel and Hisar. Today it is known as the Starosel Thracian Shrine Complex, or the Royal Thracian Complex and Mausoleum. It is believed to be built some time during the 5th century B.C., probably erected in honor of Sitalk I, the first Thracian emperor, who ruled the lands from the Danube to the Aegean Sea.
The complex provides a wealth of information about a little-known civilization, but one that was very significant during its time. The view from atop the hill is worth seeing.
