At the crossroads of the Rila, Pirin, and Rhodope mountain ranges, 800 meters above sea level, is the town of Velingrad. Known for its healing waters, Velingrad is a great place to rest, relax, or go for a walk in the quiet and peaceful streets, littered with fountains and small restaurants. The city’s name comes from the former government of partisan Vela Peeva.
The area in and around the town is rich in water sources, rivers, and 80 different karst and mineral springs. This makes the city one of the most visited places for spa treatment. Many of the clear rivers and streams flow into the river Chepinska. Velingrad is often called the “spa capital” of the Balkans, as it is home to many therapeutic spas and hotels.
There are 9000 liters of water flowing from four thermal and mineral springs every minute. Kleptuza, a karst spring, is one of the most famous tourist attractions of Velingrad, and the park of the same name with its two lakes is a symbol of the city.
