The Ancient Thracian Tomb in Pomorie is situated in the western part of the town, near the main road between Burgas and Pomorie. It dates back to the 2nd or 3rd century; historians believe that it was used as a mausoleum for a wealthy family from the ancient city Anhialo, and a place for pagan cult celebrations.
The tomb consists of a corridor (dromos) with a length of 22 meters, and a circular chamber with a diameter of 11.60 meters and a height of 5.5 meters. Built out of stone and brick, it differentiates itself with its hollow circular column, a unique architectural structure in the Balkans. Inside the column there is a spiral stone staircase that allows access to the top of the tomb. In the inner wall of the tomb there are 5 niches, which housed the urns of the deceased. Historians suggest that the walls were covered with paintings, of which there are only traces of green plaster.
The perfection of the architecture and construction are very impressive. Historians are still trying to figure out the secrets of the sponge-shaped dome. Some believe that the stairs leading underground allowed the priests to communicate with the dead, and talk to the gods when on top of the mound.
This amazing place is definitely worth a visit, and the secrets that it holds will certainly make you think.
