The Salt Museum in Pomorie was opened in 2002, and tracks the city’s experience of extraction salt by means of solar evaporation through the centuries. This is the only museum of its kind in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe.
The museum collections present the technology of our ancestors, used in the production of sea salt in Pomorie. The museum has a hall of expositions and two acres of saltpans. Photographs, maps and solar tools depict the development of activities that have taken place in the region over the past two centuries.
The methods used for the production of sea salt in the museum are the same as those used in ancient times. Visitors can see the all the different steps of the production first hand, exchange information with specialists and experience the work and its local significance. In fact, according to historians, salt pans have existed here from the 5th century B.C. and were instrumental in the founding and development of the town.
The Pomorie Reserve Museum is located near the Salt Museum.
