The Ancient Stadium in Plovdiv was built at the start of the 2nd century during the reign of Emperor Adrian. It is located in the northern part of the city, between the hills of Taksim Tepe and Sahat Tepe. The stadium accommodated 30,000 spectators who came to enjoy the events there. It was the largest stadium of its time, with a length of 240 meters and a width of 50 meters.
Today, the visible part of the stadium is a small part of the whole. It was a preferred meeting place for the locals, and a great starting point for exploring the Old Town and the other ancient landmarks found here.
The Ancient Stadium has a small museum with a space designed for showing 3d movies depicting Plovdiv as it was in the 2nd century (entrance fee required).
