The Kilifarevo Monastery is located south of Veliko Tarnovo, along the river Belitsa. It was built by Theodosius in 1348 – 1350, with the generous help of Tsar Ivan Alexander.
The monastery quickly became a literary and artistic center, the most important teachings being domestic education and human knowledge. The monastery is surrounded by massive stone walls that were not able to protect it. It was destroyed and burned down several times during the Ottoman era. Its last restoration was in 1830, in which participated the famous Bulgarian craftsman Kolyo Ficheto. He also participated in the construction of the St Demetrius of Thessaloniki Church (1844).
This holy place, imbued with positive energy and spiritual power, will surely impress visitors with its beautiful iconostasis and icons made by local Tryavna artists.
