Chepelare is a small peaceful Bulgarian town nestled in the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains. The Karst Museum of the Rhodopes is one of the most interesting places to visit there. It will provide you with a greater knowledge of mineralogy and geology, which will complement your visits to the various caves in the Rhodopes. The museum is unique in Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe.
The minerals and rocks characteristic of the Rhodope Mountains, insects and stuffed game will surely hold your interest, despite the condition of the museum. There is also a skeleton of a giant bear and people that lived in the nearby caves thousands of years ago. The majority of the oldest exhibits in the museum are from the Yagodina Cave, and are about 6,000 years old.
