The Seven Rila Lakes are without a doubt some of the most beautiful sites in the Balkan Peninsula. Their famous beauty and charm attracts tourists from all over the world. The lakes have a glacial origin and are arranged in a circular formation, on different platforms at the foot of Damga Peak. The name of each pond is derived from its shape and characteristics. The lake known as “The Tear” is the highest, sitting at an elevation of 2535 meters. Located at the foot of Otivishko Peak, its name comes from the clean and transparent waters of the lake. Nearby you can find “The Eye”, an oval-shaped lake with a depth of 37.5 meters, and “The Kidney” , the deepest of the seven lakes. Below them is the “Twin Lake”, which is nearly divided in two and resembles an hourglass. The trail leads to the next lakes, “The Trefoil” and “Fish Lake”, on the shore of which you can find the Seven Lakes Hostel. The lowest of the lakes sits at an elevation of 2095 meters, and is unsurprisingly named “The Lower Lake”.
