Catherine’s Gate is the oldest gateway into the ancient fortress of Brasov. During the 16th century, in the year 1559 to be price, this gate was built in order for residents to have easier access to the city of Brasov. The four towers surrounding the main tower symbolize “Jus Gladii”, or the “right of the sword”. This symbol can also be found on the Clock Tower of Sighisoara. Jus Gladii was a privilege given to the towns of medieval Transylvania, which allowed local officials to inflict capital punishment in their respective cities.
Although it suffered many damages throughout the centuries, the gate has been restored and is now considered a symbol of the city.
