Following the various Turkish and Tatar attacks that occurred in Transylvania during the Middle Ages, the authorities of Brasov decided to build a citadel for the city. This took place at the end of the 14th century, when fences were built along the majority of neighborhoods located at the foot of Mount Tampa. The protective wall features impressive dimensions (12 meters high, 2 meters thick), which helped to make Brasov one of the best protected cities in Transylvania.
The responsibility for constructing and securing these bastions was entrusted to the various professional guilds of the city. These structures are the main remnants of the ancient citadel, whose walls were either destroyed or replaced with new buildings. Some of the remaining bastions include the Bastion of Tiser (Bastionul Postavarilor) and the Merschan Bastion (Bastionul Postavarilor), the Scheii and Catherine gates, and the White Tower. It is possible to discover the walls of the ancient fortress on the slopes of Mount Tampa.
