Biertan is a village near the road leading from Sighisoara to Sibiu, situated in the hills of Transylvania. This village was once inhabited by the Saxons, who for the most part left these lands after the fall of communism. These people left the village a rich architectural and cultural heritage that can be seen throughout the streets of the village and at the top of the hill, where there sits a fortified church. The church is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The settlers here believed that in the case of a war, it would be better to leave the confines of the village and save their lives and property by heading for heavier fortifications. This led to the decision to build a structure that could protect them and was easy to reach.
The houses in the region are lined up very close to each other and form uniform streets, with the church being located at the center of the village.
