This city sits atop a wooded hill, and is considered the most beautiful medieval city in Romania. At the heart of the city you can find the “Church on the hill”, which was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1999. Founded by Transylvanian Saxons on the Tarnava Mare River during the 12th century, the city of today is located on the site of an ancient Roman fortress.
Nine towers with pointed rooves still stand guard along the ramparts, the most famous of which is the Clock Tower (Turnul cu Ceas). The tower stands at a height of 64 meters, and is a must-see sight of the city. The city council was located there up until 1556, and today it houses the Historical Museum.
Not far from the tower, on the corner of the street “Cositorarilor” is the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula.
