This small town in the Arges County (whose capital is Pitesti) was the capital of Wallachia in the 14th century, before being replaced by Campulung. Its present name (Palace of the the Arges River) comes from the fact that the Royal Court of Wallachia was housed here (before the city's name was Arges).
Curtea de Arges retains many monuments from this period, many of which were built in honor of the voivodes of Tara Romaneasca (Romanian territory), such as the Church of St. Nicholas.
