The town of Horezu is located in Valcea County, between Ramnicu Valcea and Targu Jiu. This small town is the main ceramic center in the country, and attracts many Romanian and foreign tourists. The pottery of Horezu, an art created throughout the centuries, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2012.
The art of ceramics is passed down from father to son in the families of potters, who maintain their techniques for processing clay. The main symbols used for decorating the ceramics are the Rooster of Horezu, firs, snakes, galanthus flowers and the tree of life.
The clay used here is unique, and is found only on Ulmet Hill near Horezu. Here you can see the greatest potters of the region working with clay all year long, creating various forms and local symbols.
Each of the 27 families of potters in the city offers their visitors their products, as well as a tour of their studios.
