In 1806, the Armenian diplomat and merchant Manuc-bei visited Bucharest and decided to build a caravanserai in the heart of the city, which eventually was completed in 1808.
The building long served as an inn for merchants who came to do business in Bucharest. In 1812, the inn hosted the negotiations of the Treaty of Bucharest between Russia and the Ottoman Empire, thus making Bessarabia (now the Republic of Moldova) a Russian territory.
Built of stone and finely crafted wood, in recent years the caravanserai has become a home for bars and restaurants, which offer local specialties in a unique medieval décor.
