The Romanian Athenaeum (Ateneul Român) is a monument on Calea Victoriei (Victory Road), near the George Enescu Square. Completed in 1888 after 2 years of construction, the Athenaeum is a concert hall, whose plans were designed by the French architect Albert Galleron in a neoclassical style. Concerts of the George Enescu Philharmonic are carried out on the stage.
Inside the building there is a very interesting frescoe – that of Marea Fresco. The decoration of the building only began in 1933, when the mural project was finally accepted by the painter Costin Petrescu. Petrescu created this stunning work of art, which depicts the major events in Romanian history in 25 scenes. The 7 meter long fresco was completed in 1939.
