The ruins of the Argamum Fortress are located on top of the cliffs of Cape Dolosman, on the horizon of Lake Razim.
Argamum is the oldest archaeological site discovered to date on Romanian territory. This ancient fortress was built by Greek colonists in the 6th century B.C, when they still controlled the naval routes of the Black Sea. Upon arriving in the territory of the Dacians, The Romans conquered this small city in the first century. It was subsequently abandoned after the departure of the Latin settlers.
Archaeological research conducted during the twentieth century uncovered the existence of many farms and homes, as well as four basilicas. The archaeologists who worked on the site also believe that most of the ancient city remains to be discovered, contrary to previous studies.
