Establish in 1936 under the initiative of Dimitrie Gusti, founder of the Bucharest School of Sociology, this museum is one of the first of its kind in the world. Located among the lush greenery on the banks of Lake Herastrau, the museum is a wonderful tourist oasis located in an urban environment. It includes nearly 300 buildings – churches, houses, and workshops – restored around the country. Rural farms are fully furnished and equipped with beds, wooden tables, icons, carpets, and kitchen utensils. Old kerosene lamps and agricultural tools are also preserved.
All regions of Romania (Dobrogea, Bukovina, Muntenia, Moldova, Transylvania, Maramures, Banat, and Oltenia) are represented in this museum, which offers a comparative analysis of the different types of buildings and lifestyles in the country. Each house has a wooden fence and gate, some modest, and some monumental.
Highlights of the museum are the wooden church from Dragomireshti (Maramures), the fishing house from Zhurilovka (Danube Delta) and the ceramics workshop from Horezu (Oltenia).
