The village of Mahmudia, whose name is reminder of the Ottoman domination over Dobrogea, is located on the banks of the St. George (Sfantu Gheorge) branch of the Danube. This is a convenient starting point for boat rides through the channels of the Danube Delta. The village also has places to visit, such as the ruins of the Roman/Byzantine fortress of Salsoviya, or the House of the Fisherman (Casa Pescuarului), a small museum showcasing the life of fishermen in the delta.
