Union Square (Piața Unirii) is located across from the Parliament along Union Boulevard, the largest boulevard in the city. These urban buildings, with exteriors similar to the Parliament, impress with their size and are the result of the communist government’s attempts to restore the city after an earthquake in 1977. Thus, the architecture reflects Nicolae Ceausescu, who was largely influenced by the architecture in the East after visiting China and North Korea in the 1970s.
With a length of 3.5 kilometers, Union Boulevard was created in an attempt to exceed the Champs-Elysées in Paris. The boulevard was originally named “Victory of Communism”.
