By 1736 the defense system of Medias was fully developed. At that time there were three major gateways into the ancient fortress and 19 towers, 10 of which are still intact.
In the center of the ancient fortress stands the Tower of Trumpets, so named because of its importance to the city. The guards of this tower were charged with the task of watching for fire or invading attackers. On top of the tower are four smaller towers, showing intruders that the city had the right to impose the death penalty. In this regard, if a guard were to raise a false alarm, they were punished on the spot and thrown from the tower. The height of the building is 68 meters, and the tip is at a tilt of 2.28 meters from the base, due to the shifting of the soil throughout the years.
