First mentioned in 1411, the Grand Square of Sibiu dates from the 15th century and is the historical heart and must see place of the city. During the Middle Ages the square became the main public area of Sibiu. Many aspects of daily life took place here, such as social meetings. Also, public executions were held here. There was even a “crazy cage” placed in the square between 1724 and 1757, in order to lock up criminals that were arrested during the night.
The square features a length of 142 meters and a width of 93 meters. It has undergone many changes since the reconstruction of the city in 2007. The result of this work is impressive; the square is again filled with life winter for exemple, when the municipality organizes Christmas markets there. From an architectural perspective, the square and all of its surrounding buildings are classified as historical monuments, making it an inviting place to take a stroll among the beautiful streets of Sibiu.
