Following the invasion of the city by the Tatars in 1241, Sibiu began developing its defense systems up until the 15th century. At that time, the fortress walls covered a large part of the existing town center, which made Sibiu the most fortified town in Transylvania, with a fortified area equal to that of Vienna. The first fortress wall protected only the Huet Square, while others were later built to protect the Small Square, a large part of the upper city, and finally the lower part of the city near the Cibin River.
Today the most visible remnants of these fortifications can be found in Citadel Park (Parcul Cetatii), in the souther part of the city. There you can see the towers of the ancient citadel (at one point there were 39 total), each linked to different craftsmen (weavers, potters, carpenters etc.), who were supposed to participate in the defense of the city, each in their own way.
