This building was built in the 18th century in the baroque style, on the orders of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal. Built as the residence of the Baron, it is located in the western part of the Grand Square (Piata Mare) and is a designated historical monument.
The Baron was a very fond of European and Romanian art. A museum which displays parts of his collection is now housed inside the palace. It features several exhibition halls, with different themes of the collection.
