The Monastery of Curtea de Arges was built at the request of Neagoe Basarab (a Wallachian ruler) between 1512 and 1517. Its rich decorations were completed in 1526, during the reign of Radu Afumati. Neagoe Basarab was a proud man, and wanted his church to be unmatched by any other in Romania.
The architecture of the church features eastern influences, and it is presicely this fact that makes this building unique in Romania. The gilded murals of the interior are relatively new, having replaced the previous decorations following an earthquake during the 19th century.
The bodies of many members of royalty, such as Neagoe Basarab, Carol I and King Ferdinand I are buried here.
