In 1316, after Charles Robert of Hungary awarded Cluj the status of a free city, construction began on the Church of St. Michael, and was completed in 1390. The bell tower, built between 1511 and 1543, was damaged by a fire in 1697 and then hit by an earthquake in 1763, leading the residents to construct the current clock tower in 1837, in a Neo-Gothic style.
The Church of St. Michael is the tallest church in Transylvania, the top of the tower rises to a height of 80 meters, and its dominating presence can be felt in the Union Square and throughout the city. Inside you will find the Schleuni Chapel, which is dedicated the St. Michael the Archangel and preserves the most beautiful frescoes of the church.
