The construction of the National Theatre was carried out in 1906, by Fellner and Helmer, an Austrian enterprise specialized in the construction of theatres. Their works also include the theatres in Chernivtsi, Iasi, Oradea and Timisoara.
The building was built in a Baroque-Rococo style, with a capacity of 1000 seats and three rows of boxes. In 1919, it hosted a Romanian theatrical performance for the first time, and in December of that same year, a performance was held in the Romanian language, with the goal of reducing tensions between the Romanian and Austro-Hungarian communities.
