This cathedral is considered by many to be the most valuable piece of Roman architecture in Transylvania, and even all of Romania. The construction of the current cathedral began in 1246 and was concluded in 1291. Before this, there was another cathedral which dated to the year 1009, but it was destroyed by invading Tatars in 1242.
The Saint Michael’s Cathedral serves as the seat of the Transylvanian Archbishop and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese. It is also the resting place of former Hungarian politician John Hunyadi and his son Ladislau.
This structure is a major historical monument, and dominates the Alba Iulia fortress with its 62 meters in height.
