Macin Mountain National Park is one of the most interesting natural areas in Romania, but also one f the most unexplored. These mountains come directly from Hercynian range (a mountain range that covered Europe about 360,000 years ago) and therefore are the oldest mountains in Romania. Today it is hard to imagine that these hills, whose maximum height is 476 meters (Mount Tutuiatu) were once the size of the Carpathians.
The structure of these mountains and their vegetation has remained the same: dense forests of beech and Tilia that extend into the foothills and rocky peaks, thanks to the aridity of the region. There are many species of flora and fauna that are native to these mountains. The landscape of these mountains is fantastic. The views from atop the cliffs reveal the plains of Dobrogea, the northern part of the Danube Delta of Romania and Ukraine, and the river that circles the mountains to the east, north and west.
Life in the region revolves around the Balabancha Municipality, in the valley below the mounts. Wine production is typical for the region, especially in Machin and Niculitel. This area, thanks to their remoteness from any major urban centers, is able to protect and safeguard their traditions and unique cultures that can be found in each of the villages bordering the Macin Mountains.
