The Cocos Monastery is part of the “Triangle of Monasteries”, which also includes the Saone and Celik-Dere monasteries. Built in 1833 by three monks from Moldova, the monastery is situated amidst a beautiful wooded landscape and wetlands at the foot of the Macin Mountains. The name Cocos (which means “cock” or “rooster” in Romanian) was temporarily given to the monastery after the appearance of the animals, while the monks were yet to decide on a name.
Dozens of monks maintain this incredibly beautiful monastic complex, even to this day. The church of the monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. There is also an entrance tower, a living quarters for the monks and a museum of religious art.
