The Museum of National History and Archaeology is the second museum of its kind in Romania, after the one in Bucharest. It was built shoryl after the annexation of Dobruja to Romania, in order to cut down on the smuggling of archaeological finds. Thanks to the rich history in the territory of Dobruja, the museum houses a unique collection of artifacts found during archaeological excavations in Constanta and the Romanian coastline. There are more than 430,000 artifacts, dating from the Neolithic period to the present day, which are preserved in the museum. Although it is over 130 years of age, the museum has only been housed in its current building since 1977.
